Nova International, organisers of the Great Scottish Swim, has been advised today by the Event Safety Group that the event, which was due to be staged on Saturday August 21 at Strathclyde Loch has been postponed because of the prevalence of blue- green algae. This decision has been taken in the interests of safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed by The Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

British Gas Great Scottish Swim Cancelled for 2010

Following the postponement of the British Gas Great Scottish Swim at the weekend, we are disappointed to have to let you know that it will not be possible to stage the event in 2010. The reason for this is that with the unusually high levels of blue-green algae currently still above the acceptable limits in the loch, and with the water temperature likely to drop significantly in the coming weeks, there is not a suitable date where the safety group can be confident that the event can be staged in a fully safe environment.

Unfortunately, at this late stage, it will also not be possible to relocate the Swim to another venue.

We are actively researching potential dates for 2011 and in view of the blue-green algae issue we will be aiming to ensure that the date minimizes the chances of postponement or cancellation.

We have three options that are available to you which are:

  1. Receive a full refund of your 2010 British Gas Great Scottish Swim entry fee
  2. Defer your entry to 2011 at no extra cost
  3. Transfer your entry to the British Gas Great Salford Swim 2010

All participants will receive an email on Tuesday 24 August containing information about how to apply for one of the above options.

If you have any queries please email info@greatswim.org

Thanks you for your cooperation and understanding.

The Great Scottish Swim team.
