Alternative Waves

At the Great North Swim, we know that everyone experiences open water swimming differently.

Alongside our standard swim waves, we offer a number of alternative waves designed to create different types of experiences in the water, whether that’s swimming in a women-only environment or taking part in a calmer, quieter wave.

These waves are designed to help more people feel comfortable and confident taking part in the event.

Women-Only Wave

Our women-only wave offers the opportunity to swim alongside other women in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Whether you’re new to open water swimming or simply prefer the atmosphere of an all-female wave, this swim provides a space to take on the challenge together.

The women-only is a half mile swim that takes place on Friday at 6pm. Click below to enter.

Quiet Wave

The Quiet Wave is designed to provide a calmer, more relaxed start for swimmers who may benefit from a quieter event environment.

This wave offers a reduced-noise start area and a more gentle atmosphere, helping swimmers who may feel overwhelmed by larger crowds or busy event spaces to enjoy the Great North Swim experience.

The Quiet wave is a half mile swim happening at 2pm on Sunday. Click below to enter.

Try Stand-Up Paddleboarding at the Great North Swim

New for 2026, we’re introducing SUP sessions on Windermere as part of the Coventry Building Society Great North Swim weekend.

Stand-up paddleboarding has become one of the UK’s fastest growing outdoor activities and we’re excited to bring it to the shores of Windermere for the very first time.

This non-competitive SUP experience is designed to be relaxed, social and accessible: perfect for anyone who wants to spend time on the water and enjoy the incredible Lake District setting in a different way.

Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or completely new to SUP, this guided session will give you the chance to explore Windermere from a new perspective.

What to expect

Participants will need to bring their own board and equipment for the 2026 sessions.

Who is it for?

The SUP sessions are open to anyone looking for a fun and accessible way to get out on the water during the Great North Swim weekend.

It’s the perfect addition to the event for:

The Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Session is on Saturday at 4pm. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Click below to enter.
